Film Noir Lighting style.

  1. Research ‘film noir’ focusing on the genre’s distinctive lighting style. Find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it alongside your research.

Basic lighting concepts

  • Typically use low-key lighting to create harsh shadows
  • They use a lot of high key and filler lighting to add particular focus

Other affects pro-dominantly used.

  • intense lighting threw a window
  • foggy backgrounds with back lighting
  • shadowy figures

information from premiumbeat.

In the beginning you can see the idea of shadows and the top lights used to highlight expressions.

Film Language: Lighting

Low-key lighting: dark, dramatic shadow
The lighting that seems to be used is low-key lighting we can see this because the lighting creates a lot of darkness whilst casting a dramatic shadow. What the casting of shadow does is it causes the audience to perceive the character as much more mysterious thus acting more suspiciously towards her. This sort of lighting is typically usually a key convention of the horror and film-noir genre.
Top and back lighting
We, as an audience, are aware that top lighting is being used as the lighting helps to accentuate the features of the character and makes her appear more glamorous. This is a key feature of all femme fatale characters which helps to create the more beautiful and stunning appearance of the female character. There is also back lighting begin used as it creates a sort of solitude on her face. By casting a shadow over her face, without ignoring her facial features and expression, adds to the element of mystery and suspicion which works in synergy with the low-key style of lighting also used.
This overall creates all the feature of a femme fetale which is iconic of the film-noir genre.

Low key lighting:
The lighting used appears to be low-key lighting due to the fact that the contrast between the dark and lit sides seems to be extremely strong. The only thing lightened is the females face and her fingers. The low-key lighting used helps to add a strong focus on the face of the female character – it shows us that the facial expression and appearance of the character is much more important than her surroundings. Moreover the deep black surroundings adds an aura of power to the female as she sort of demands all the attention yet keeping the idea of a sort of shadow being cast over her suggesting she may be secretive and isn’t to be trusted - she almost seems dangerous because of this which is a key feature of the femme fatales of the genre.
Top lighting and a bit of back lighting:
The top-lighting lights only her face which gives her more of a realistic appearance but also which draws attention to her expression and her beauty. This almost creates an idea of the light shining upon her which gives it a religious perspective. However this is strongly contrasted with the back and low-key lighting as well as the prop of a cigarette in her hand. This contrast may have been used to create the idea that this woman isn’t what she seems which strengthens the idea that the director doesn’t want us to fully trust this woman and constantly remain suspicious towards her. The backlighting is used to create the solitude that surrounds her, the darkness that surrounds this gentle appearing character.

High-key lighting:
There is a realistic effect to the picture, we can see most the face however only a small shadow is created around his eyes and neck. The filler lights help to show all the clothes and the face suggesting the whole overall appearance of this character in meant to influence the audiences’ opinion on the character. The opinion we get of him due to his clothing is that he is powerful which works in synergy with the prop of the crown and the serious facial expression.
Top/under lighting:
The use of the top light helps to create a shadow under the eyes of the character which causes the audience to act more suspiciously towards the character, due to the fact that the eyes, which usually create an idea of the intentions of the character. Because his eyes are shaded it suggests to the audience that the character is almost shady and shouldn’t be trusted thus causing the audience to remain suspicious towards the character. More over the expression paired alongside the shadows and the under lighting creates a rather harsh image reflecting a rather harsh character – this may even cause the audience to view him as the antagonist.

Low-key lighting:
The audience understands the fact that there is low-key lighting being used due to the fact that there is a strong contrast of shadow of the clothes the character is wearing and the lighting on his face. The contrast made help to focus on certain areas of the character showing us what parts are far more important. By directing the audience’s attention to certain objects and aspects but always from things like the coat almost says to the audience this is a dark character but had a strong stance (expression) and isn’t too forgiving (the gun)
Top and back lighting:
A lot of spot lights are used to focus on particular aspects of the character like the prop of the fun, the face and the sign with the name of the area, the rain is also lit up in a way to make it stand out. The back lighting gives him a sudden edge and power in his stance working in synergy with the low angel shot used which typically creates the idea of power.

Low-lighting:
The difference between the brightly lit face of the character and the shadow it casts is highly pronounced. The strong shadow creates the sense of strong danger and the brightly lit expression creates the idea of brightly lit fear.
Under lighting:
The shadow being cast on the wall is elongated due to the fact that the light is shining from behind. This elongated effect of the shadow helps to add the idea that danger is taking place and creates the sense of prolonged fear. The sense of fear is increases due to the synergy with the length of the shadow and the strong expression of the character. The positioning of the female close to the wall and the body language also highlight this idea of danger and fear.

High-lighting:
The lighting used is extremely realistic which adds to the intimacy of the image.
Top and back lighting:
The top lighting helps to elongate the features of the two characters which make them seem more glamorous as well as highlighting their expressions creating a stronger feel of intimacy. The back lighting used helps to shadow out the rest of the surroundings showing the importance of the kiss to the two characters.

Low-key lighting:
There is a strong difference between the shadows and the bright lights behind the four figures thus creating a more mysterious feel to these 4 characters as well as suggesting that the audience may infer that these four characters may be contrasts of each other suggesting their strong personalities. The strong shadows help to give the whole situation and occurrence as sense of mystery and intrigue.
Back lighting:
The back lighting helps to create the strong solitudes of the characters and extremely elongated shadows that almost reach out to the camera. This just reinforces the reasoning for the choice of low-key lighting. They both work together to create the overall effect of intrigue, importance and an almost eerie atmosphere.

Low-key lighting:
We as an audience can see the sudden contrast of shadow that is placed light next to the brightly lit face of the character. The contrast helps to draw attention to the character and her fearful and shocked expression as well as the position she is standing in.  From this we can infer that the character is fearful of something that we cannot see yet working as an enigma code as we wonder what could be the cause of the character’s extreme fear.
Back lighting (more to the side)
This helps to create the shadow on the wall adding to the overall dark and dangerous feel of the situation, the darkness works in synergy with her grave expression to provide the audience with a connection with the character as they can see how scary the situation may feel.

High-key lighting:
The lighting gives the character a realistic look but still casts a shadow without there being too much contrast. This is probably because the character may be meant to be religious in some aspect and a sudden dark shadow would give off the opposite meaning. This causes the audience to perceive the character in a more positive light.
Top lighting:
The lighting helps to highlight the features of the character in a more flattering manner, this also may reflect ‘the light from above’ which works with the effect of the high-key lighting and works in synergy with the touching hands (that are also brightly lit like face of the character) to create the idea of religion and a more ‘enlightening’ character.

Low-key lighting:
This helps to add to a very eerie scene but making the darkness almost stand out in bold and focus on the mask and the prop of the knife. The dark lighting paired with the low angle shot of the character creates the idea that this character may be the antagonist of the movie. This dark lighting also reflects to the audience that the scene is taking place at night which helps to add to the fearing of fear and suspense. This lighting is iconic for the horror genre.
Under/back lighting:
The under lighting used helps to create a distorted effect that makes the character appear more powerful and scary - this is another iconic feature of the horror genre. The back lighting helps to give a shadow and powerful solitude which makes the character seem more deadly.

High-key lighting:
This creates a realistic feel to the scene and makes both characters equally attractive by their own means. The importance of each character is spread out between to the two conveying to the audience this is an important scene for both character. This lighting, however, cleverly creates more focus on the characters so the audience almost miss the prop of the gun which gives a sudden shock to the audience creating a sudden panic and perceiving it as an enigma code making the audience question its presence.
Top lighting (Back lighting for the male):
The top lighting makes both characters seem glamorous as well as adding focus on the eyes of both the characters and how they are locked together. The soft back lighting behind the male character suggests he may be a bit dangerous which works in synergy with the prop of the gun in his hand, making us slightly cautious towards him and questioning of his motives.

Film Language: Mise-en-scene

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

Setting and props: The group of boys seem to be inside what looks like a cave, this is suggested by the rough background of the uneven floor and the dim lit lights in the distance. This suggests a narrative where the characters may have to face some sort of physical hardship. The male at the right seems to have what looks like a gun strapped to his clothes, this suggests that the group but engage in a physical battle or are in some sort of danger.

Lighting and colour: The colour of the shot is of a dimly lit blue, with little lighting however the characters facial expressions seems to be lit up. This helps to understand that this is a emotionally heavy scene of the movie yet (due to the darkness) the characters may be in a 'dark place' and in some sort of trouble.

costume,hair,make-up: The characters all look (slightly) dirty and tired. This highlights the idea that the characters must of been thorough a lot physically and are still waiting for more of this hardship to come their way. They all seem to be wearing clothes suggesting a particular role. The first male in the front seems to be wearing some sort of chest amour suggesting he may be in physical danger frequently. The male behind him is wearing overall suggesting he has to do manual work much more frequently than the other role.

facial expression and body language: Both characters seem to be of shock and anticipation suggesting that there is some sort of danger nearby and the characters are fully aware of this. Both the males seem to be standing in a legs wide position suggesting they are taking a strong stance but have a backwards tilt to their posture suggesting they may need to run or escape some sort of danger.

Position of characters: They are all spaced out suggesting they 'have eachothers back' again suggesting the idea of danger being nearby

2) Find three film extracts on YouTube from films of different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama) and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

Women in black trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPYMUnJGURI (drama/horro)

The setting is really old and Eire, like it is stuck in the past. This is a typical convention of a ghost/horror movie. There are always props from the past like the old and antique furniture. The lighting is dark and dim which helps to add suspense and fear to the movie which is an essential for the genre.
The costume and make up is formal but from an old era which helps to highlight the concept of the past which is always the focus of these types of movies.
The facial expressions of the characters are curious at first which causes the narrative to move on but then soon change to horror and fear - the body language is nearly always stiff and ready to run from any danger. The character positions of the protagonist is usually close to the camera so we can see most things from their perspective and the protagonist (or ghost) has variety of positions to evoke different reactions in the audience eg. in the distance for suspense and close ups for sudden shock.

Insurgent trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suZcGoRLXkU (sci-fi/thrilla)

utopian and dystopian fiction has much more of a run down and 'dying' appearance compared to the eari setting the ghost and horror genre have however they can be similar in that they both provide a feeling of loss and destruction. The sci-fi side of the movie shows in the modern and clean cut of the buildings they use which are much more elegant than the setting of the horror genre. The props used highlight the sci-fi genre as they have a futuristic feel to them whereas in the paranormal movie genre they typically are forced to use some ever day objects out of fear rather than high tech gadgets. The lighting and colour is really bright in the the buildings which add to the modern and developed characteristic of the sci-fi genre. The costume of the main characters is mainly fighting gear which adds to the whole end of the world feel to the genre but they also wear suits that have some sort of technology reference to them. This contrasts with the worn down and old fashion clothes that most people wear in paranormal movies. The body language is much more 'fight' than 'flight' in this genre which is usually the case for scary movies. The expressions are much more powerful and determined in the genre. The characters positioning is much more organised and spread out so they have room for the encounters that usually take place in the Utopian genre.

Little boy trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_BdzqsIX6A (comedy/drama/war)

Drama and war movies usually have a setting that's full of commotion and this movie is. The setting is one of an old time period, like many other war movies, and is more similar to the scary movie genre in this case. There are a lot of things such as old cars and war planes that add to the authentic feel of the war genre. The lighting is much more neutral as it tries to reflect real life and has moments of a more 'dusty' lighting adding to the destructive feel of the genre. The clothing is much more of an old style thus reflecting the time period typical to the genre. The facial expressions are one of fear and sadness like many scary movie genre however just like the sci-fi genre there is that trace of hope in the small smiles of the characters.

DIVERGENT - Movie Clip #4: The Chasm - YouTube

Divergent is an adventure/sci-fi movie. We can understand that this is an adventure movie by the location. Its in an odd and remote location inside what appears to be a cave. This sense of it being something different and unknown is usually a huge focus of the adventure movie genre. The lighting is slightly dim but clearly lighting each of the main characters (of the scenes) faces helping to reflection the emotion of each character, this is an important feature of adventure movies as the audience is always aware of how each character is feeling in the given situation. The colours are dark which add to the fact that this movie is much of an action movie as well as the adventure side of it. This creates a much more serious atmosphere for the given genre. When we look at the clothes they are wearing we can see its like a uniform suggesting the main narrative follows a group of 'school'(ish) teens. The clothes look fit and ready for any combat training therefore highlighting the action side of the movie. The facial expression of the male is much more stern and detached compared to the other characters suggesting hes the leader/trainer of the group which is usually other key person in an action/ adventure movie. We can see that some of the characters don't seem to pleased with the action which may indicate a certain defiance that might soon take place and lead to the adventure element of the movie. The characters are stood quiet close together creating the idea of them being like a team which indicates they may stick together like most character do in a adventure movie.

Introduction to Film Language: homework

Image result for blade runner
     Blade Runner :

1 1. What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
We can see the central image is of a male which suggests to the viewer that he will be the protagonist (hero)
Looking at the poster we can see a tagline in the top right hand corner with the words “man has made his match… now it’s his problem” what this suggests to the audience is that the women on the poster is going to be his ‘problem’ therefore we will be following the story of both the male and female. The word choice of ‘made’ suggests that he may have even created the women which suggests how the movie may begin.
We presume the ‘problem’ will be the female due to her being the only other character who is significant enough to be on the poster. More over the facial expression of the female suggests a negative role (of the antagonist) as well as the type of lighting used. The connotation of the prop (the cigarette) is also negative and it also has synergy with the tagline of ‘match’ – you can even see the smoke of it reaching up into the tagline thus visually connecting the too.

2.    2. What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
Due to the prop of a futuristic gun and a flying car working in synergy with the image of the metropolis that seems futuristic we can infer that the genre will be Sci-fi as these are often seen as the key conventions of sci-fi movies. The iconography therefore works alongside the metallic colour scheme to enhance the concept of a sci-fi movie.
The typography of a more animated font also is another key convention of these sci-fi movies.

3.     3.Who do you think is the target audience?
The poster has a strong suggestion that it’s an Art house movie to too the highly animated feel of the poster thus suggesting an Art house audience which mainly consist of the urban middle class population. Due the genre we can also infer that the target audience is most likely to be 18-32 year olds. The actors name is also shown on the poster which shows that his loyal fan base is also a likely target audience.

     Scary movie 2
Image result for SCARY MOVIE 21. What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
The film is most likely to follow the story of a group of teenagers (as they are all presented on the poster and share around the same amount of space as each other suggesting an equal amount of importance between them) from the tagline we can presume it will be what the tagline says. Due to the movie being a sequel we can tell it will carry on a story which the last film probably left of at. From the way that the characters are dressed we can presume that each character will show an important to/stick to the certain connotations we have with each costume. We can presume the girl on the right hand side with the green top will be the flirt out of the group and the girl on the left hand side with the red top is more likely to be the smart one who investigates most the scenes due to the captions on their shirts. This is reinforcing the typical stereotype of teenagers.

2.       What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
From the tagline at the top in yellow we can tell that it is a comedy movie. This works in synergy with the overly dramatic expression each of the characters wear. When we look at the little we can see a little ‘scary’ face in the ‘o’ of ‘movie’ which means that this movie is a parody and will be making fun out of typical horror/scary movies.

3.       3,Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience is most likely to be teenagers which we can tell by looking at the cast on the poster. They all seem that they are supposedly meant to be playing the role of teenagers who are labelled with things like ‘the flirt’ etc. This means it’s trying to get the audience to identify with each of the characters thus enjoying the film more. The movie seems to be (maybe)aimed at older teenagers though as there is use of the word ‘shameless’ and the characters don’t seem too young. This means it’s probably aimed at teenagers of a middle class background and probably of the age range of 15-21

 Uzak

1.       1.What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
The movie is most likely to be of a male protagonist (the central image) that lives in an urban area (where the image is set). Due to the fact that we don’t really see the leads face we may feel that he has a ‘shadow’ cast over him or he might be having some sort of identity crisis and he’s trying to find himself and so the audience only knows one piece of information(the title). The snowy setting may be a visual representation of the lead feeling ‘cold’ inside which works in synergy with the overall dark, mercy and cold colour scheme of the overall poster.

2.       2.What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
The film is most likely a drama genre due to the dark concept of the overall poster. The fact that is an Art house movie also adds to this idea, as the overall editing of the poster doesn’t seem too overly up to spec which suggests it’s a low budget movie with usually explore some sort of social issues.

3.       3.Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience is most likely to be c-b class demographic as the movie seems to explore a sensitive issue which may be something like war/depression. The audience seems to be a much mature and serious audience suggesting the age range may be something around 25-40 due to it being an art house production and not many young viewers go to independent cinemas.

 I'm not scared

1.       What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
The story is most likely to be a focus of the boy who is the central image of the poster facing his fears that lay in the tunnel that he’s looking down at in the image. We know he may be facing some sort of fear where he needs to be brave due to the title. The title is written on the side of the cave which suggests what he’s ‘not’ afraid of what’s in the tunnel. The fact that he’s looking down into the cave/tunnel we can presume he’s about to get ready to face whatever’s inside due to his fascial expression.

2.       What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
The film is most likely going to be an adventure (maybe suspense due to the reference and focus on the concept of fear) genre due to the brightly coloured sky and that the focus is on something unknown which in this case is the cave the protagonist is looking into.

3.       Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience may be families due to the lead being of a fairly young age and it seems like another art house movie so again the more limited target audience. Therefore the target audience is likely to be middle class and (if watching individually) from 19-28(?)

Sin city

1.       What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
There is a group of people (the top 4 characters) that play the lead roles of the movie due to the main focus of the poster on them. The smaller character near the bottom of the poster shows a male character who is most likely to be the antagonist due to the casted showdown over him to sort of represent the ‘dark side’.

2.       What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
The movie is most likely to be an action movie due to the iconography of the black and red colour scheme and the guns in the hands of all the lead characters.  The clothing of the characters, like the black leather jacket of the protagonist, and the long black cloak of the antagonist are also few of the key conventions of action movies.

3.       Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience of action movies are typically males therefore the percentage of male target audience would be 80% and 20% female. The age range is most likely to be around 20-30

Pirates of the caribbean dead mans chest

Image result for pirates of the caribbean dead man's chest1.        What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
The film is about pirates, we can tell this by the costume of the male lead and the picture of pirate ships right below the lead roles, this works in synergy with the title as they create a clear image of what the movie is about. There is a female character next to the male lead suggesting a love interest at some point. The poster also has this warn out feel to it like old maps which creates to the theme of pirates as well as the typical skull and wooden sign associated with the pirate style movies.

2.       What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
The movie is a mix of adventure, fantasy and action as that is what pirate style movies usually consist of. We also get the idea that it will be an action movie due to the gun that the lead role is playing.

3.       Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience is likely to have a wide range of 15-33(but may also reach a 13-15 range as well) due to the overall franchise which also targets previously loyal fan bases of the movie.

 Bride and prejudice

Image result for bride and prejudice1.       What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
Due to the sentence at the top we can presume that it’s a romantic story between the two characters that are the central focus and the characters lined up along the back are the reason for the comedy which suggests mishaps. The fact that the poster has reference to Indian culture suggests it’s a more diverse movie are that is most likely going to be the root of the ‘comedy’
2.  What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
The film is most likely a rom-com due to the tag line and most likely a parody of the book of ‘pride and prejudice’ from the change to ‘bride’ we can see that it will be making fun out of the concept of the book.
2.       Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience are most likely to be from an Asian background due to the show of Asian culture in the background due to the reference to Indian/Pakistani culture as they are more likely to understand certain inside jokes which are exaggerated in the movie (regarding their culture). The movie is most likely to be aimed at a young adult target audience but could range a bit above from around 17-35 (making it a sort of family film)

 Million dollar baby

Image result for million dollar baby
1.       What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be?
The film is most likely to be focused on the female who is the central image and she might even be the ‘million dollar baby’ as the title is almost labelled to her back. The two male characters are in the shadow behind her so we can tell they will have some sort of direct link to the character but it may not be so easy to spot as they will almost certainly ‘remain in the shadows’ when in contact with the girl in the movie suggesting some sort of separation she has with the two characters(she might be an isolated character). From the title we can connote that this movie might even be a kidnap movie and the character may be worth a million dollars as ransom.
She seems to sort of be wearing a black sports top suggesting she may be participating in some sort of sport.

2.       What genre(s) do you think the film belongs to?
Due to the dark colours and isolated feel of the poster we can see that it may be an action movie or is we look at the more isolated and alone side expressed by the poster we can almost predict a sort of drama movie genre.

3.       Who do you think is the target audience?
The target audience for the genre is most likely young adults so the age group of around 18-28.
